Even the Rotwell papers of
last Friday passed tin- comment,
"Coal wagon i mi the trot all
day": while farther to fche north
and east the wind blew cold and
damp, women's skirts flapped
unpleasantly in the brisk breeze
and men held their ears or hur
ried from one place of shelter
to another while the residents of
dear old Alamo basked in the
bright sunshine, went to ami fro
in shirt waists or shirt sleeves,
gathered the tall vegetables
from the garden plat and enjoy
ed the most delightful climate in
the wide, wide world.
The Denver Tost and a few
other anti-administration organs
have attempted to make the
mining people of the west be
lieve that the forest reserve reg
ulations are entirely too strict
with men who desire to take
mining claims in the reserve.
That this i- false is shown by a
circular from the department
which says that the forester de
partment is not only willing but
anxious to assist prospectors at
any time and any place where
the character of the mineral is
such as to warrant any outlay in
the development. The local of
fice in Alamogordo which is in
charge of Forest Supervisor Neal
is also willing to assist the men
who are prospecting in the hills
and the story that the depart
ment is opposed to the mining
industries is false.
It seems incredible, "that for
live thousand quarter sections of
land in the Rosebud agency there
were -.'ii (i.ii (i (I applicants.
The Rosebud agency is a section
of land in South Dakota which
the government recently opened
for settlement. The soil is al
most identical w ith that of west
ern Kansas and Nebraska, the
rain fall is about the same. The
depth of flowing water is on an
average over 10U feet and in
many places from no upward.
There is neither fuel nor build
ing material within miles and
miles of the agency and the
winters are simply terrible, while
the summers are short and hot.
Yet when the government ad
vertised this land open for entry
upon the condition that the set
tlers are to pay tt.00 per acre
for it in addition to complying
with the homestead law. they
rushed in in such numbers that
only one man in forty had a
chance to win. Pray tell us why
there remains one acre of unset
tled laud in this beautiful Sacra
mento valley, where the climate
is perfect, the soil is fertile, the
water shallow and abundant,
both fuel and building material
on your own land and a market
for everything that you have to
sell. Ye hungry land seekers
of the north and east turn your
attention to the Great Southwest
and the Sacramento Valley.
A Space Filler
John J. Ingalls, a celebrated
Kansas statesman once wrote an
article such as only John J. In
gall's caustic pen could write
and in it portrayed the Satanic
Majesty, with his seat of govern
ment changed from hell to New
Mexico. With due apologies to
the honored Kansas brother the
following is submitted.
The devil grinned a hideous
grin and quietly stroking his
pointed chin, he held himself
with a haughty air and mused,
"That job is parsing fair." A

of every briar I'll plant the root

bunt: when I get through with
their "Sunny Southwest" they'll
think I've been going about my
best. It will be no home for the
human race, it will truly be
known as a hell of a place. But
the Kansas man with his hoe and
his level seemed to know not the
fears of even the devil. Of
nature's great laws he had some
information and plenty of faith
in God and the nation. He dug
a good well and set up a mill
and built a nice house at the
bow of the hill. He got him a
cow, and a horse, and a hen and
started to work as if expecting
to win. There was never a time
he attempted shirk, but ever
was ready and willing to work.
He planted the kaifir and millet
and maise: and startled his
neighbors with crops that he
raised. Twelve months in the
year from his garden he'd pick
abundance to eat, and he never
sick, 'twas the finest climate and
healthiest place Clod ever gave
to the human race. The devil,
he tore and snorted and swore
and promised to burn him for
ever more. He incited the cow
man to swear, "it was known that
never a thing in the valley had
grown." The Kansas man sat
with his chin on his hand, calm
ly surveying the lay of the land
then resuming his spade, his hoe
and his level, he quietly told
him to go to the devil. His fig
tree has prospered, his apple and
pear; around and about him are
crops everywhere. His simple
receipt is, take brain, take vim
and the mixture, will make the
whole valley a beautiful picture.

Waldrip. In order that pupils
may accomplish the most in
school, it is essential that they
be present every day. With the
proper co-operation of parents
and teachers in regard to attend
ance, school life can be made
very profitable.
As our school is not yet per
fectly graded, it is difficult to
classity the work oi some of our
students, however, we have at
tempted, and have been govern
ed, in each students case, by the
grade in which the most of his
work appears. As is shown in
this report the students, doing
tin ami sen grane worts have not
a majority in either, hence, the
report as herewith indicates.
Below we give the average

Mr, Houston who lives just
north of town went to the hills
this week to do a little work and
when he returned he found that
about 100 head of eattle had been
in his field for several days and
they had destroyed about 20 ton
of hay which he had shocked in
his lield. Mr. Houston had the
misfortune to have his leg broken
this spring and this feed which
was destroyed was almost the
entire product of his summer's
labor or rather the summer's
labor of bis two little buys. It
seems to us that the owners of
the cattle should be forthcoming
with the damages.

arranged into a very convenient
and comfortable nine room resi
dence. Mr. Goldsmith the paint
er and paper hanger lias put the
finishing touches on and Mr.

lirst class furniture until the
place is certainly line and dandy
it has all the conveniences of
the modern residence.
Mr. Pfafi'enberger from Colo
rado bought the Messer ranch
this week. It consists of 240
acres and brought about $15 per
acre, it is seven miles from town.
It is a money making proposition
for Mr. Pfall'enberger and as he
is an old time fruit man from a
real fruit country and has the
money to handle the proposition
it will also be a good thing for
this valley.
